Once upon a time each switch, sensor, detector, contact or device needed its own pair of wires to signal back to a central control unit what was happening. Then came the advent of technology and instead of sending a signal over a dedicated pair, signals were coded and sent over a single common pair.
This could have been really bad for the cable industry but fortunately two things happened just in time. Firstly pretty much everyone developed a proprietary system for sending data (signals) requiring specially designed cables and secondly we, the users, decided we wanted to switch, sense, detect, measure and control almost everything known to man, thoughtfully saving the cable industry from oblivion.
New signals are sent between devices and addressed to specific switches, controls etc. to control whatever needs controlling. Almost certainly your car uses the technology to save weight and make for simpler wiring. Now the systems are widely used in the industry, building control, transportation and alarm systems.
