Changes to British Standards January 2013

There has been a large change to British Standards (BS standard) relating to Harmonized (European HAR) cables up to and including 450/750V ratings. This is a European Community effort to unify the standards used and products available in the EU market.

A lot of the changes do not physically affect the cables, most of the change is relating to the testing procedures and standard number that they fall under. This means there is no problem in continuing sell or use existing market stock produced before 01/01/2013.

All products manufactured from 01/01/2013 need to comply with the new standard EN 50525. It supersedes HD21 & HD22 and must be implemented in its unchanged state. The following information summarize the changes to the popular product ranges offered by FSC Global:

BS EN 50525 for wiring & flexible cables up to and including 450/750 V became effective 1st January 2013 .It replaces the following British Standards that were withdrawn on 31st December 2012

U = SOLID CONDUCTOR, R = RIGID STRANDED CONDUCTOR
K = FLEXIBLE CONDUCTOR FOR FIXED INSTALLTIONS,
F = FLEXIBLE CONDUCTOR FOR FLEXIBLE APPLICATIONS

“Z” in a cable code denotes +90°C cross-linked thermosetting compound.
“Z1” in a cable code denotes +70°C thermoplastic compound.

H07Z1Z1-F (+70°C LSHF Thermoplastic) is required to pass EN 60332-1-2 vertical single wire flame retardant test
H07ZZ-F (+90°C LSHF Thermoset) is now required to pass EN 60332-3-24 vertical bunched cable flame retardant test

+70°C thermoplastic versions of 6491B (H07Z-R/U) & 2491B (H07Z-K) are now listed in EN 50525-3-31.
These are subdivided into two “Type” categories, the type number must be marked on the sheath:

Type 1 (Fire retardant to EN 60332-1-2) Type 2 (Fire retardant to EN 60332-3-24)

H07RN-F to BS EN 50525-2-21 now has a maximum operational temperature of +60°C.

BS EN 50525-1 section 7.4 annex A has new requirements for testing the mechanical strength of flexible cables.

Halogen Free cables are now required to be tested in accordance with the procedure shown in BS EN 50525-1,
Section 7.5 (see annex B).

BS 7211 & BS 6004 now only cover cables manufactured to British Standards.
