Project Overview:
FSC Global supplies specialist H.V. cables for Plasma research in India
To support the development of the Fusion program an Indian based research sub-contractor required a unique specification cable for use on Plasma Research equipment. As the specification required did not exist FSC Global were called upon to provide a solution.
The Challenge:
Engineers at the Institute were looking for cable for power supply inter-connections on power generation equipment. However, due to the high voltages required when generating plasmas, and the resulting corona effects, the cable needed to be designed and manufactured to withstand 35kV D.C.
The Solution:
For the project, FSC Global used a combination of specialist manufacturing techniques and high performance tetrafluoroethylene materials to supply the 200 metres of corona resistant 35kV single core cable needed for the power supply.
For such specialist applications FSC Global’s ability to offer very small cable quantities can offer real benefits to clients where they would normally be facing a minimum manufacture quantity of 3 or 5km from larger, international manufacturers.
Since the success of the contract, FSC Global has fulfilled a repeat order and is working on related projects with the client. This time the challenge is a specialised 55kV triax power supply cable with two layers of screening to prevent EMI.
Summary:
"FSC is supplying specialist cables to many large Science programmes in UK and also abroad; and in future they are likely to compete for ITER work," said Dan Mistry, head of Fusion and Industry, UKAEA. "A small organisation, with a niche technical capability, FSC Global just the kind of company we are looking for to compete for ITER work.
